Preparation of Cooling Water System

1.    Check the Cooling water tank level and fill it in if needed.

2.       Prepare the cooling water system for starting.

3.       Change the position of valve from stop to operation.

4.       Stop the system water leakages.

5.       Check cooling water system for proper venting.

6.       Check the operating parameters.

Pre-heating of the Engine

1.      Carry out the  Preheating of the engine to protect the engine from abnormal thermal expansions.

2.       Ensure the proper circulation of lubricating oil and fuel oil systems

3.       Operate a cooling water heating system is installed.

To bring the operting parameters of the engine, it is required to heat the engine by circulation of cooling fluid at least before one to two hours.

Make sure that rotating parts of the Engine are free from obstacles.

Pre-lubrication of the Engine

1.       Heat the lubricating oil temperature to 40 ⁰C by heater.

2.       Operate pre- Lubricating oil pump if stepped.

4.       Check oil pressure rise and pre-lubricating oil condition.

  • Lubricate the dry surface of liners by pouring 50 CC of oil through indicator cocks.Spray the oil under the piston and turn the engine.
  • Rotate the engine with shaft barring araangement. Turn the engine by few revolutions and check the freness of moving parts. Turning is also done to assure the non persence of any fluid trapped in the combustion chambers. Proper checks during turning will prevent the engine from hydraulic locks and major damage to the components..

NOTICE:- If there is any sign of escaping fluid through the indicator cock, wrap the indicator cock Clean the fluid scattered around by waste cloth.

Rotate the crankshaft by 2 to 3 revolutions for observing any fluid emerging from cylinders.

NOTICE: – Fuel remained inside cylinders before starting may cause overpressure and heavy smoke during starting.

Disengage from turning gear

Fuel regulating System preparedness

1.       Check if the engine load is removed.

5.       Press the start button and check the air running condition.

6.       Press the start button again and check air running condition.

NOTICE; –Ensur the machine readiness for the operation by air running the engine.

Starting the Engine

1.       Check the indicator cock closed.

2.       Check the position of ready to start indication bulb.

3.       Press the start button

NOTICE; an authorised person only should do the normaland emergency starting ot eh main engine.

Start the engine by local starting system. Starting from the local station is done for ensuring the stopping of enegine manually in the event of any emergency during the intial starting.

WARNING:-Stop the engine immeiatel if any abnormality is detected or suspected. carry out the proper investigation of the abnormality before attempting to re-start the engine.

1.       As soon as the engine oil pressure start bulding by the engine driven lube oil pump, in this case lube oil priming pump should come to stop postion automatcally. This is to be observed closely. Immediately stop the engine if the lube oil pressure is not rising by its own pump.

2.       Check the air venting and cooling water pressure.

3.       Check fuel feed pressure.

4.       Check Turbocharger speed.

5.       Always check the exhaust temperature of each individual cylinder to ensure that all the cylinders are firing .

Check the exhaust gas temperature of each cylinder whether firing occurs.

6.       Check the engine system for any leakages..

7.       Check all shutdown and alarms function correctly.

Rechecking after Initial Starting

Inspect the condition of parts if the engine has been installed, standing still for a long period, or overhauled for the easy starting of the engine and prior to loading the engine.

Run the engine at no load for 5 minutes and stop it for inspections.
Check the internal parts through the side crankcase doors for any abnormal heating.
Check the temperatures of Connecting rod bearings, main bearings, Any abnormal rubbing of piston into the liner.

Re-start the engine and contnue running for a period of at least 30 to 45 minutes at adle speed,. Stop the engine fter that and carry out the feel over check once again.
